Frequently Asked Questions
-
As a patient of Saltwater Family Wellness, we ask that you do not have another family physician. If we become aware that medications, investigations or referrals are being provided by another primary care provider (outside of emergency care or specialist services), you may be asked to leave the practice.
-
Any physical or verbal aggression, harassment, or threats directed toward staff or physicians will result in immediate discharge from the clinic. This is a zero-tolerance policy, and no exceptions will be made.
-
We practice broad-scope, evidence-based family medicine using up-to-date guidelines and current scientific literature. We are committed to providing an inclusive, non-judgmental space for all patients.
-
We understand that life happens, but missed appointments affect our ability to care for all patients. After three no-show appointments within a calendar year, a fee of $50 will be applied and must be paid prior to booking your next appointment. You will be notified by email or letter after each no-show. This policy also applies to cancellations made within one hour of a scheduled appointment.
-
You will be asked to provide a reason for your visit at the time of booking. This ensures you are scheduled for the appropriate amount of time and is done out of respect for all patients. All information provided is kept strictly confidential.
-
If you arrive more than 5 minutes late for your scheduled appointment, you may be asked to reschedule if we are unable to accommodate you. As our appointment slots are scheduled to ensure timely care for all patients, we appreciate your punctuality.
-
Saltwater Family Wellness is a clinical teaching site. You may encounter medical students or resident physicians at your appointments. If you have any concerns about this, please let us know.
-
Refill appointments are an important opportunity to reassess your health and discuss appropriate screening. Please do not wait until you have run out of medication to book as same day appointments for this reason cannot be accommodated. A fee of $20 applies for same day prescription requests without a scheduled appointment - please do book a follow up appointment within 1-3 months if you decide to pay for a refill.
-
Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest rate of antibiotic overuse in the country, contributing to antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections and are not effective against viruses. We do not prescribe antibiotics for viral conditions such as the common cold, sore throat, cough, runny nose, bronchitis or gastroenteritis. If you would like more information, please as us for a patient handout on appropriate antibiotic use.

Opioids: We do not prescribe opioid medications (including Percocet, Oxycodone, Hydromorphone, Morphine, Tylenol No. 3, Tramadol, and others) for long-term use except in rare, medically indicated circumstances, often in consultation with a specialist. A prior prescription from another physician does not guarantee continuation of these medications. If opioids are determined to be medically appropriate, a signed agreement will be required. Any breach of this agreement may result in the medications being reduced, more closely monitored, or discontinued.
Benzodiazepines & Z-Drugs: The same principles apply to benzodiazepines (such as Lorazepam, Diazepam, and Oxazepam) and Z-drugs (such as Zopiclone and Zolpidem). These medications carry serious risks with long-term use and will be gradually tapered and discontinued where possible. If you are experiencing difficulty with sleep or anxiety, we are happy to discuss these concerns and explore evidence-based alternatives with you.
Psychostimulants: Medications used in the treatment of ADHD also require a signed agreement prior to prescribing.

If you require a form to be completed, please inform staff at the time of booking. Forms are generally completed within one to two weeks. If your physician does not have sufficient information to complete the form, an additional appointment or specialist input may be required.
